Gov Buni’s Convoy Ambushed by Boko Haram, One Police Officer Killed, Others Wounded
A convoy of official vehicles belonging to Yobe State Governor, Hon Mai Mala Buni, was ambushed by Boko Haram terrorists on the Jakana-Mainok Expressway, resulting in the death of one police officer and injuries to six other security personnel.
The incident occurred as the security operatives were returning to Damaturu, the state capital, after attending the 24th Convocation ceremony of the University of Maiduguri.
Governor Buni had earlier joined other dignitaries at the ceremony but had to proceed to Abuja for another official engagement.
Sources disclosed that troops leading the convoy with MRAPs, a gun truck, and another vehicle carrying police and DSS personnel were targeted by the terrorists.
The troops responded with heavy gunfire, forcing the terrorists to retreat.
“Unfortunately, one police officer paid the supreme price, while two soldiers, including a driver, and four policemen were wounded,” a source stated. “The terrorist casualties were unconfirmed at the time of filing this report.”
The wounded security personnel and the driver were evacuated to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, the Director General of Media and Press Affairs to Governor Buni, Comrade Mohammed Mamman, confirmed the incident but insisted that only three security personnel were wounded.
He added that the convoy successfully reached its destination, and the wounded individuals are responding to treatment.
