The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University Gashua (FUGA) Chapter in Yobe, has protested against the no-work-no-pay policy imposed on the Union by the Federal Government.
The group also frown at the decision of the government to pay the lecturers’ October salary on pro-rata basis.
Speaking during the protest in Gashua, the Chapter’s Chairman, Dr Melemi Abatcha, noted that paying the lecturers through pro-rata was a plot for casualization of their appointments.
“ We are protesting against the maltreatment of lecturers through weaponization of hunger and intimidating court order.
“ Rather than addressing the cardinal demands presented by the Union, the Federal Government through her agencies resorted to blackmail and intimidation.
“ Such antics was the casualization academics through pro-rata payment of October salaries,” he said.
While urging the Federal Government to honour its agreement and pay all withheld salaries, the Chairman maintained that the Union rejected the humiliation of academics in Nigerian universities.
Our correspondent reports that the lecturers were seen in their numbers carrying placards with inscriptions, including “ pay our withheld salaries” and “ PMP we are not casual workers.”
