Lawan, NEMA donate N10m, relief materials to Nguru fire victims

President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, has donated N10 million to victims of the fire incident at the Nguru central market, in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) also donated food and non food items to mitigate the sufferings of the victims of the fire disaster.

Lawan who described the market as important to the entire people of the state, said that government would investigate the fire to guard against future occurrence of the incident.

“We are going to do everything possible within our limit to support our people, some lost their businesses because of the fire incident.

“When I heard about the fire outbreak, I immediately informed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.

“Therefore, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has brought some relief materials for you to cushion the effect of the incident.” he said.

In her remarks, Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouq, Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, described the incident as unfortunate.

Umar-Farouq, represented by Alhaji Grema Ali, Director Humanitarian Services of the ministry, said that President Muhammadu Buhari had directed NEMA to assist the victims.

She listed the items to include 1,500 bags of rice; 1,500 bags of beans, 1,500 bags of maize, 150 kegs of vegetable oil, 125 cartons of tomato paste and 75 bags of salt.

Others were 2,400 bags of cement; 2,400 bundles of roofing sheets, 2,200 pieces of ceiling boards as well 1,200 packets and bags of nails.

The minister said the relief items were meant to complement the effort of the Yobe Government in providing succor to the affected persons.
