NGO supports inmates with sanitary items in Yobe

Non-Governmental Organisation, Sahel Initiative for Justice to Women and Children (SIJ-WAC) has today presented hygiene items to inmates at the Nigerian Medium Security and Correctional Center, Potiskum Yobe State as part of livelihood support to the vulnerable to ensure proper hygiene.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after the presentation of the items, the Executive Director SIJ-WAC Barrister Altine Ibrahim said that the items include face masks, hand sanitizers, detergents, hijabs, blankets, mosquito nets, clothes, wrappers, toothpaste and brush among others.

Apart from the presentation of the sanitary items, she explained that they have sensitized some of the inmates at the facility on Covid-19 prevention measures, fight against SGBV and secured bail for two who have lesser offences.

“We will continue following their cases, we feel they’re also members of the society because they are there to be corrected, we want to show them that the society cares for them while we expect them to step down the knowledge to their mates who were not opportuned to be part of the enlightenment.

While highlighting on her organization, Barrister Altine Ibrahim added that they focus on Citizenship & Identification
Community / Customary Land Rights, Corruption, Gender-based violence, Generalist Legal Services, Peace-building & Transitional Justice, Women’s, Children and Youths Rights Sahel Areas.

She further disclosed that Sahel Initiative for Justice to Women and Children (SIJ-WAC) is a non-profit making organisation devoted to the cause of enhancing the pursuit for justice and the respect for fundamental Human Rights. It undertakes to provide pro bono legal services, access to justice and assistance through paralegal system to victims of injustices and human rights violations in Sahel area including IDP’s.

On their mission, she said “To promote justice initiatives and the respect for human rights and democratic principles in Nigeria through education and skills trainings, strategic litigation, creative activism, advocacy programming, research and development.

Advocates and encourages programs and Domestication of laws that protects, prompts the rights of the vulnerable and complies with human rights norms”.

“Our objectives is to promote home economics security of families during humanitarian crisis and food insecurity. To promote, preserve, and protect the rights of most vulnerable women and children in society”.

To guide women and children who are victims of Gender Base Violence in accessing justice through paralegal and pro-bono legal services.

“To Provide access to justice for vulnerable women and children, Promote the formation and strengthening community with paralegal actions for justice redress Enhance skills and capacity building of security and legal personnel on Gender mainstreaming and related matters.

“To Enhance and strengthen the capacity of Gender Base Violence Victims to attain their fullest potentials in life.To facilitate the social reintegration of Gender Base Violence [GBV] Victims and Internally displaced people [IDPs].

To promote activities of Gender equality socially, economically and politically.

“To enhance peaceful coexistence within families and the larger society through mediation and conflict resolution.

Promote the domestication and operationalization of laws and policies that aimed at promoting rights of women and children.

“To improve social reintegration mechanism of separated and unaccompanied children in Humanitarian crisis.To partner with relevant NGOs and MDAs in rendering services that would create a just, violent free and peaceful space for women and children.
