National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Yobe office says human right awareness level has been raised among the people of the state.
Mr. baran Babangida, the State Coordinator of the Commission disclosed this on Friday in town hall meeting, marking the closing of a 16- day activism in Damaturu.
“The first year we commenced our activities in Yobe around 2017, we received only about 70 complaints, the second year it rose to around 94, this year we are getting about 200.
“So, there is tremendous achievement as regards the level of public awareness. So people have begun to realise what are their rights and have started seeking for redress.
“We also address a lot of issues on GBV. This year alone we have received 94 cases,” Babangida explained.
He said within the 16 days of activism, the commission had embarked on various activities to be able to end violence against women and children in the society.
“We have also informed people on how to access NHRC and other partners in terms of seeking redress”, he added.
The State Coordinator also emphasised on the theme:Equality, Reducing Inequalities, Advancing Human Rights stated that, the theme is guiding us to respect the right of PLWD, stopped discrimination, violence against women and violations of rights
Miss Halima Jibrin, the Education Officer Plan International, said that during the 16 days of activism, they had reached out to various communities and educated parents especially, those who denied their daughters access to education.
She said the campaign had yielded good results as some of the parents had realised the importance of girl child education.
Jibrin also commended Yobe government and other partners for their supports in the state.
