Plan International, a non-governmental organisation has handed 10 primary health centres which it constructed and or rehabilitated to Yobe government.
Dr Muhammad Gana, Yobe Commissioner for Health disclosed this while taking over the facilities from the organisation on Thursday in Damaturu.
Gana said the facilities were constructed and rehabilitated in five local government areas (LGAs) of Bursari, Damaturu, Fune, Nguru and Yusufari
He explained that the NGO built two primary health centers in each of the five LGAs.
The commissioner said the gesture would improve the health conditions of inhabitants of those communities particularly women and children.
He said that it would further strengthen the coverage of routine immunization and other primary health care services besides boosting the morale of health workers in the state.
The commissioner acknowledged other interventions by Plan International, such as the capacity building of health workers, provision of maternal and child health equipment, provision of drugs and consumables to facilities.
Others, according to him, were support for quality sexual and reproductive health services and rights for adolescents and the training of community health volunteers, among others
Speaking earlier at the event, Robert Komach, the Director of Operations, Plan International, said the project was meant to remove barriers that prevent young girls and women from accessing the relevant healthcare that they deserved.
Komash, represented by Mr Avindigh Titus appreciated the Yobe ministry of health for providing the necessary guidance on how to achieve success in the project.
He said that Yobe was the only state where the regional project was implemented in Nigeria.
He therefore appealed to the ministry of health to increase access to gender appropriate services.
