Khadija Baffa Badamasi, a member of Yobe State Children Parliament called on government, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders for urgent interventions on child education in the state.
She made the call at a press briefing on Girls’ Education for Conflict-Affected Northeast Project on Thursday in Damaturu.
Badamasi, who is also a girl champion of Save the Children International advocated that girls should be in school and not married until 18th birthday.
She called on government and other stakeholders to make learning easy for children with disability so that they do not feel neglected among other members of the society.
She also called on government at all levels fight against early and forced marriage.
“There must be effort to increase community awareness of negative impact of child early and forced marriage and sensitization for the right of girls to education. Sound”, she said.
Speaking at the occasion, Hamisu Mohammed, the Speaker Yobe State Children Parliament lamented the difficult conditions faced by girls and children in the state affected by conflicts.
“In the states affected by conflict, education is extremely hard for all children and even more for girls living in those states which put them even farther behind in achieving their full potentials.”, he said.
Mohammed before called on government, civil society and non-governmental organisations to protect students, teachers and schools from the worst effects of armed conflict.
Earlier in his welcome address, Mr. Mark Umoru, the SCI Field Manager, Yobe State said SCI had been implementing the Education for Crisis-Affected Girls (ECG) project in Yobe for the past 3 years.
The project according him aimed at supporting crisis-affected girls aged 6 to 14 to exercise their equal and inalienable rights to quality education and gender equality.
Umoru thanked our Global Affairs Canada for providing funding the project.
“We appreciate the Government and good people of Yobe State without leaving behind our highly revered traditional and religious leaders for their continued support of our work in Yobe State.”, he added.
