Alhaji Idi Gubana, Yobe Deputy Governor and Chairman, Education Appeal Fund Raising Committee said the state education fundraiser would hold on February 10 in Abuja.

Gubana disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Wednesday in Damaturu.

He said the committee was primarily formed to raise funds from individuals and corporate bodies to salvage education in the state.

This, he noted is in line with the recommendations of the recently held Education Summit in the state.

The deputy governor said government would use the funds to increase access and equity in basic and secondary education by establishing more schools for the girl-child and people living with disabilities.

“ The funds would be used for recruitment, training and retraining of teachers and the improvement of their welfare packages.

“ The money would be used to enhance monitoring and evaluation mechanism, through adequate funding, provision and maintenance of operational vehicles.

“ Others are the provision of adequate teaching and learning materials, improving school feeding, as well as the promotion of extracurricular activities, among others,” Gubana said.

He noted that the over one decade-old activities of Boko Haram insurgents had undermined the educational development of the state.

“The insurgents unleashed their acts of terror on the whole society with the education sector being the worst hit.

“Apart from destroying schools’ infrastructure, 167 students and 3 teachers were killed, while 36 students and 2 teachers were seriously injured. ”, he said.
