The Yobe Ministry of Women Affairs, in collaboration with the UNFPA, has begun 16 days activism against gender-based violence in the state.
Declaring the campaign open in Damaturu on Friday, Gov Mai Mala Buni of the state reiterated his commitment towards protection of fundamental rights as well as wellbeing of women and children.
Represented by his deputy, Alhaji Idi Gubana, Buni said he had earlier assented to the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act and the Child Protection Law, to demonstrate the commitment.
He said the state had also established three special courts to enhance speedy dispensation of justice for Gender Based Violence cases.
The governor expressed optimism that the judicial reforms implemented by his administration would address the menace of GBV in no small measure.
He assured that government would continue to introduce viable programmes to fast track women and girls empowerment.
Buni commended the UNFPA and other development partners for their support towards GBV in the state.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Hauwa Abubakar said the campaign would focus on attracting funding for programmes aimed at ending GBV.
She lauded the proposed establishment of seven girls secondary schools by the Buni-led administration, saying the gesture would enhance school enrolment among girls in the state.
The commissioner thanked the UNFPA for the construction, renovation and equipping of the state owned Motherless Babies Home to a standard Women and Girls Dignity Centre.
“It is a one stop centre for GBV survivors and other vulnerable women and girls who are traumatised as a result of gender-based violence.
“So far, UNFPA and other partners have supported the training of over 500 beneficiaries at the centre, in partnership with Ministry of Women Affairs,” she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that highlight of the event is the presentation of award of excellence to the governor by the ministry.
