Some stakeholders have reacted over the suspension of the eight-months-old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The stakeholders made their feelings known in separate interviews with our correspondent on Friday in Damaturu.
Khadija Muhammad, a final year students at University of Maiduguri said the learning atmosphere of universities must change to better, otherwise the long strike was useless.
“We supposed to have graduated by now, but the action distanced us from our dreams.”, she said
She called on the management of universities and lecturers not to rush students unnecessarily.
“This is not our fault in any way. Therefore, we should not be at the receiving end.”, Muhammad added.
She advised fellow students to be more serious in their academic activities rather than other unimportant things.
Babakarami Isah, a postgraduate student expressed happiness over the suspension of the strike by ASUU.
He said “the consensus between federal government and ASUU should have been reached earlier before now.
“We have already suffered academically. We can not recover the time we lost.
“However, we are happy and we pray this will be the last time this kind of disagreement would ensue between the two parties.”, he said.
Malam Modu Babagana, a parent expressed happiness and commended borh federal government and ASUU for reaching out agreement.
He said as result of the long strike action, many students engaged themselves into various harmful activities that could cost the parents and society.
He, however hoped that the development would help to retract the students and engage them positively.
Mr Yahuza Aujara, a lecturer at the Sule Lamido University, Jigawa state commended the efforts and resilience of ASUU.
He said the union was fighting not only for its members but for the salvation of the entire system.
“If not because of ASUU, university education will end of being like that of primary school education in Nigeria.
“A primary school teacher prefer to take his wards to a private school than the public school he teaches.”, said.
Aujara called on the federal government to respect all the agreements reached with union to avoid further occurrence of the action.
He also commended all parties to the reconciliation especially the members of the national assembly.
